The species of fish you can catch near Chatham include...Bluefish are usually ravenous and often strike at anything you give them. Look out for those TEETH! They average 3-7 lbs but tend to be larger offshore. The juveniles are usually referred to as 'snappers', can be found inshore, and are fun to catch with light tackle. In all cases they put up an excellent fight all the way to the boat. Fluke have a great fighting ability and are known for their aggressive behavior. The upper surface of the summer flounder head faces left. They also have prominent teeth to assist with their aggressive predatory behavior. Larger fluke are referred to as 'Doormats'. Stripped Bass are the most sought after species, providing great sport through catch and release fishing. Stripped bass are the largest fish available to the near shore angler. Fish range from 3 lbs up to 30-40 lbs. Tuna are very swift swimmers and provide a thrilling and sometime backbreaking fight. The bluefin tuna is the largest and most lucrative of the tuna in the Chatham waters and create much competition among fishermen. Sharks The "Cape Cod Shark", or dogfish, is common in the waters around Chatham and can provide a good fight and lots of fun for the whole family. |
